Lions are one of the world's most iconic mammals. Female lions are called lionesses.
Did you know? While male lions are bigger and stronger than the females, it is actually the lionesses who do most of the hunting. They work together to bring down big prey. They also work as a team to raise and protect their cubs.
People have been including lionesses in their art for millennia. Female cave lions can be clearly seen in the paleolithic cave paintings in France. Ancient Egyptian statues depicted lionesses with a halo around their heads.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Lioness
1. Begin by using curved lines to sketch the lioness's face. Note the contours of the brow, muzzle, and cheek, as well as the tuft of fur near the neck.
2. Use curved lines to draw the top of the lion's head and her rounded triangular ears. Detail the inside of each ear with curved lines.
3. Detail the lioness's face. Draw a rounded, inverted triangle to form the nose. Below it, detail the mouth with an upside-down "Y" shaped line. Draw three parallel lines across each side to indicate the whiskers. Outline the eyes, using curved lines to form a circular shape with points at the corners. Shade a thick vertical line to form the slitted pupil. Draw a curved line above each eye to indicate the brow. Contour the face with curved lines down the center and alongside the snout.
4. Draw a curved line to form the underside of the neck. Extend another to enclose the irregular shape of the body.
5. Draw the rear leg, erasing as necessary. Use a pair of curved lines to form the thigh and lower leg. Enclose the paw, using overlapping curved lines to form the toes. Detail the ankle joint with a curved line.
6. Draw the remaining rear leg. Again, use a pair of curved lines to outline the front and back of the leg, the paw, and the first toe. Use short lines to enclose the toes, and a curved line to detail the ankle joint.
7. Draw the foreleg, erasing as necessary. Use long curved lines to outline the leg, side of the paw, and first toe. Draw the remaining toes using overlapping curved lines. Note the curved line that adds a furry texture to the top of the leg.
8. Draw the remaining leg. Outline the leg using curved lines, and use overlapping curved lines to enclose the toes.
9. Extend a pair of long curved lines from the lion's rump to enclose the tail. At the tip, draw a series of curved lines that meet at jagged points to form the tuft of fur.
Color your cartoon lioness. Lions are typically a sandy brown or tan. Some lions are solid white.
